Melanie & Harvey sold their very successful fashion business to their partners in 2007 and retreated to their beautiful farm in the quaint village of Gresford in the picturesque Hunter Valley Region of NSW, which is now home to “tar10”, and better known as one of Australia’s prime wine growing regions boasting world acclaim for the wines that are produced.
Encouraged by family & friends, the consummate cook and self confessed “foodie”, Melanie entered a selection of her locally grown, homemade produce into a local “Food and Wine Show” coming away with first prizes in all categories she entered, with accolades from the judges for the “best products in the show”!
Enthused by this success and with strong business acumen, Melanie saw a huge opportunity to share her gluten and preservative free condiments, (once reserved only for family & friends) with the world. With the help of her husband Harvey, they started to develop a marketing and sales strategy to get her products on the shelf for others to enjoy.
Whilst brainstorming with the family for a brand name and logo, “tar10” was born. A contemporary twist on Melanie’s proud Scottish heritage, and a play on words tartan or “tar10” as we are known, we used the family tartan, made a contemporary colour change and incorporated 10 lines of varying width both vertically and horizontally to represent the 10 to create our much loved brand.
Under this new brand, in 2010 Melanie entered some of her products into the prestigious “Sydney Royal Fine Food Show” competing against some of Australia’s best known producers, she walked away with 2 out of 3 awards, 2011 saw even further success with 5 out of 5 awards, she still remains astounded by this ongoing success with the most recent being multiple silver and bronze awards from the 2017 Royal Hobart and Royal Sydney Fine food Shows.
Being so passionate about food, Melanie continues to tantalise the taste buds by developing new flavour combinations and introducing new product lines into the ever expanding range, especially occasions such as Christmas.
Whilst a strong focus is to source locally grown produce where possible, they also employ locals from the village to produce their fabulous tasting products under the strict guidance & QC ideals of Melanie. They all work from the compliant commercial kitchen that is inspected and passed by the regulatory authorities on a continuing basis.
Since the brands inception in mid 2009, “tar10” has grown exponentially; we now have 3 Australian distributors and have been exporting to Asia and the Middle East (whom have a have a healthy appetite for products of the Hunter Valley). We have seen the growth of “tar10”, apart from the natural sales growth through the distribution network into the export market.
The “tar10” team suffered a tragic setback in the May of 2016 with the loss of our beloved Harvey. With much support from family, friends and staff Melanie continues to strive to produce not only exceptionally tasty products, but sourcing the highest quality Australian ingredients to produce our gluten and preservative free products, continuing to satisfy our loyal consumers around the world.
